Tips to Make the Easy Chocolate Bark Recipe

Making this candy bark is super easy, but you might want to have these tips and tricks handy too.

  • I have used chocolate morsels, but you can also make do with chocolate chips or even candy canes for the chocolate layer.
  • To bring a bit of fun variation to the dish, you can use a blend of two or more kinds of chocolate and create a marbled chocolate bark. Simply spread melted white chocolate, almond bark, milk chocolate and some melted dark chocolate on the roasted hazelnuts in a swirly pattern.
  • I also love making different chocolate barks using different kinds of chocolate. You can make a separate white chocolate bark and a dark chocolate bark if you want to.
  • You can use either a microwave or a double boiler to make the melted chocolate. If you’re melting the chocolate in the microwave, remember to use a microwave safe bowl and keep stirring the chocolate at every 10-15 second intervals.
  • Remember to use high quality chocolate while making bark. If you’re using chocolate bars, you’ll want to make sure that the chopped chocolate is in small pieces. This will make it easier for you to melt the chocolate, especially if you’re melting it in gently simmering water.

How Do I Store the Leftover Chocolate Bark?

This decadent treat can actually be stored for later too. Just remember to use an airtight container to store them.

You’ll need to refrigerate the layered bark and if you have broken it into pieces, you’ll ideally need to wrap the individual pieces in parchment paper.

Storing it at room temperature isn’t ideal, since there’s always a risk of the chocolate melting.

What Else Can I Add to the Homemade Bark?

  • You can also bring in a bit of flavor variation to this rather simple chocolate bark by adding some dried fruit or coconut flakes into it. You can use dried fruits like dried cranberries and dried cherries to the bark.
  • Peanut butter or peanut butter cups can also be a great addition to the chocolate bark if you want to go beyond the regular chocolate flavor.
  • You can also add toppings like crushed candy canes (if you want to make a holiday themed chocolate bark), pumpkin seeds and any other kind of seeds to the chocolate bark.
  • Sea salt in particular, can be a great topping along with the roasted almonds, when you make dark chocolate bark.
  • Roasted almonds can be a great substitute for the roasted hazelnuts in this recipe. They’ll work well with dark chocolate in specific.
