Tips & Tricks to Make Candied Apples

Ready to give this easy recipe a try? Here are some tips and tricks you might want to keep in mind when you’ve got the question- how to make candy apples.

  • I’ve used a candy coating made using candy melts and food coloring, but if you want that perfect, caramel apples, you can do that too. Just start with a sugar syrup and heat it until it reaches the hard crack stage.
  • If you’re coating the apples in sugar syrup instead of the candy melts, I would recommend using a candy thermometer. Using a candy thermometer will ensure that you get the perfect consistency of the sugar mixture, which will turn into hard candy when it coats the apples.
  • If you’re planning to make candy apples, you want to use granulated sugar to prepare the sugar coating. For a bit of a caramel flavor, I like to use brown sugar.
  • You may also want to consider adding some corn syrup to the sugar mixture in addition to the food coloring. I like using light corn syrup. Adding this helps the sugar reach the hard candy stage and makes the sugar coating for the apples smooth.
  • Remember to clean the apples well before you dip them into the candy syrup or the candy mixture. Use hot water and some paper towels to scrub the wax coating off the apples.
  • To get the classic, candied apples, use add some red food coloring to the melted candy mixture. Gel food coloring is easily available at most food specialty stores. I also like to use a different food coloring to bring in a bit of variation sometimes.

What Kind of Apples Can I Use to Make these Homemade Candy Apples?

Got your head wrapped around how to make candy apples? Now’s the time to understand what kind of apples you need to use.

Jazz apples are the perfect kind of apples to use when making a good candy apple. If you love the tart flavor, you can also choose to use Gala apples.

You can also choose to use tart Granny Smith apples or Fuji apples to make these candy apples.

I love using Granny Smith apples in specific, because I love how their flavor balances the taste of the candy mixture so well.

Can I Store the Candy Apples For Later?

Now that you’ve understood how to make candy apples, it’s time to address the next question. If you have any leftover candy apples, you might be tempted to want to store them for later.

Unfortunately, this is one of those recipes that you might want to make fresh and finish up quickly, as they don’t store well for long.

You can, however, transfer the apples to an airtight container and refrigerate them for a day if you want to, but the apple skin will end up getting soft with time.
