Making homemade pizza dough tips
Making homemade pizza dough does not have to be hard. Here are three top tips to help make that perfect dough every time!
- Use plenty of water. According to Vogue homemade pizza dough should be 50% water! That’s right and there is a reason for this! Pizza takes longer to cook in a home oven and therefore needs more hydration.
- In order to test your yeast you need to proof it. Whether using active yeast or fresh yeast, good quality yeast will create a creamy foam on the service of the water.
- The best type of flour for making pizza dough is All-purpose flour. Also known as plain flour in the UK and Maida flour in India, all purpose flour is great for making thin New York style pizza crusts as well as deep-dish pizza crusts. .
iNGREDIENTS NEEDED FOR PIZZA DOUGH
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast, or 1 package instant yeast
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 teaspoons salt
HOW TO MAKE INSTANT POT PIZZA DOUGH
Place in a large bowl the warm water, sugar, and yeast. If using active dry yeast, wait 5 minutes for it to proof. The yeast will form a creamy foam on the surface of the water.
Add in your flour, olive oil, and salt. Mix well with a sturdy wooden spoon.
Need by hand for 6 to 7 minutes on a floured surface (such as a clean counter, or large cutting board), or you can use a stand mixer with the dough hook attachment for five minutes.
Oil the inside of your pot of the instant pot. Make sure it is well coated with oil on the bottom as well as the sides of the pot.
Place your dough on the bottom of the pot. Lock your lid closed.
Select the yogurt button on your instant pot for 1 hour.
What If I don’t have a Yogurt Button On My Instant Pot?
If you don’t have a yogurt button on your pressure cooker, then you can still make delicious dough. Simply use the “Keep Warm” function for approx 1 hour and wait for your dough to do it’s thing!
Pro Tip: When making Yogurt in the Instant Pot – you can use the keep warm button instead of the yogurt button. I’d recommend approx 45 minutes. Just incase you were wondering.
After one hour, turn off your Instant pot. Remove the dough as it is ready to be rolled out, topped with your favorite pizza toppings, and enjoyed!
STORING PIZZA DOUGH
If you choose to make the dough beforehand, it can be refrigerated for 2 to 3 days. You can leave it in the Instant Pot®, just make sure that it is covered with aluminum foil in the refrigerator.
Making pizza dough from scratch can be fun, but if you’ve got a busy week ahead of you or are prepping for a homemade pizza party then storing your dough will come in handy.
Be sure to remove the dough from the refrigerator one hour prior to making your pizza as you want the dough to be room temperature.
Can You Freeze Pizza Dough?
If you want to know how to freeze pizza dough then you’ve come to the right place. It really is simple.
Pizza Dough can be frozen in any quantity. You will need to make sure your homemade pizza dough is fully risen before freezing. If you’ve cooked it in the Instant pot as per the instructions above the dough will be ready to freeze straight away.
Be sure to freeze your pizza dough in portions or in the size you wish your pizza base to be. Pizza dough can store safely in the freezer for up to months. However if your family loves pizza as much as mine, I’m sure the dough won’t need to be stored in the freezer for too long.
Adding a topping to your Instant Pot Pizza Dough
Once your dough is ready, or defrosted and at room temperature, you are now ready to make that tasty cheesy pizza! Add a tomato puree or a homemade marinara sauce to the pizza base.
If you’re a fan of spicy pizza, then you may enjoy making my Instant Pot Spicy Mariana Sauce recipe. If you’re not a fan of spice, simply leave the Red pepper flakes out of the marinara sauce recipe.
Choose any toppings you like. There’s classic Margherita, my daughter’s favourite, you may want to make a pepperoni pizza, try Hawaiian or make a Mexican pizza. Whatever topping you choose, cook the pizza for around 15-20 minutes or until your homemade pizza is golden brown.
