One of my favorite foods during the autumn and winter months has to be homemade chili. Chili is not only filling and satisfying, but it’s also relatively easy to make. Plus, you can easily customize it to your liking by adding different types of meat, beans, and veggies. And of course, one of the most important ingredients in any chili recipe is the seasoning. Today I’ll be showing you how to make homemade chili seasoning for your spice cabinet.

While you could simply buy a pre-made chili seasoning mix, I prefer to making my own seasoning for chili, the reason being, I get to know exactly what ingredients I’m using and can ensure there are no processed ingredients.

This recipe for chili seasoning is super easy to make and only requires a few common spices that you probably already have in your pantry.

Recipe Ingredients

Here are the best spices for chili. Making your own chili powder mix is super simple. There is no secret ingredient, you simply combine the following and you’ll get a great chili seasoning.

  • Chili Powder: The star ingredient, chili powder provides the heat and smoky flavor that defines chili seasoning.
  • Cumin: Adds an earthy, warm flavor that complements the heat from the chili powder.
  • Onion Powder: Contributes a savory depth that enhances the overall taste.
  • Cayenne Pepper: Intensifies the heat, adding an extra kick to the seasoning.
  • Salt: Balances the flavors and brings out the individual notes of each spice.
  • Ground Black Pepper: Provides a sharp, pungent touch that rounds out the flavor profile.

How many tablespoons or teaspoons depends on how hot you like your chili.
If you’re not sure how much chili powder to use, it’s always better to start with less and then add more, rather than adding too much from the start. You can always add more, but you can’t take away once it’s in there!

How Long Does Chili Seasoning Last?

Ideally, you should use your chili seasoning within 6 months to get the best flavor. However, it will still be usable for up to a year.

  • ● 3 Tablespoons Chili Powder
  • ● 2 Teaspoons Cumin
  • ● 2 Teaspoons Onion Powder
  • ● 1 Teaspoon Cayenne Pepper

  • ● 1 Teaspoon Black Pepper

● If you want a bigger kick added to your seasoning, include ½ teaspoon crushed red
pepper to your mix.
