How Long To Cook A Frozen Chicken In The Instant Pot?

For this specific recipe we cook the chicken from fresh. This allows us to add the seasoning and rub oil into the chicken. However you can cook a frozen chicken in the Instant Pot if you like.

Here are the general times according to the size of your chicken:

  • A Frozen Whole Chicken 4lbs: Pressure cook for 40 minutes
  • A Frozen Whole Chicken 5lbs: Pressure cook for 50 minutes
  • A Frozen Whole Chicken 6lbs Pressure cook for 60 minutes

Do I Need To cHange the amount of liquid if the chicken is bigger?

No. You can use the same amount of liquid no matter the size of your whole chicken. In fact, adding more water would simply result in a longer time to pressurise and a soggy chicken. That’s not something you want, especially if you plan to broil and crisp the skin at the end.

Can I Crisp My Whole Chicken Using The Air Fryer Lid On My Instant Pot?

The answer to this question is yes. If you have an instant pot duo crisp then simply drain any liquid from your pot and air fry your chicken for 5 minutes to crisp the skin.

If you don’t have an air fryer lid you can broil in the over perfectly fine. If you’d like to purchase the air fryer lid, here is a budget friendly option!

What To Serve With Instant Pot Whole Chicken

1. Roasted potatoes

2.  Mashed potatoes

3. Carrots, green beans or any other veggies you enjoy!

4. A side salad if that’s how you roll!

5. Go with rice if you are so inclined, but I personally don’t think it goes well with the Instant Pot Whole Chicken.  I typically choose to have a salad or roasted potatoes with a whole chicken.

What Other seasonings could i USE ON A WHOLE CHICKEN?

You can season a whole chicken with anything that is easily mixable with oil or salt. You can use any spices you desire, but make sure they are compatible with the cooking method of the Instant Pot! A few ideas for mixes are listed below, but by no means are they all-inclusive!

-Salt & pepper ( my favorite!)

-Italian seasoning

-Cajun seasoning

-Garlic powder & salt

-Chili powder & salt

-Onion powder, garlic powder, celery seed, paprika mixed with oil to brush on chicken. (This makes a nice browning/breading.)
