How Long To Cook A Frozen Chicken In The Instant Pot?
For this specific recipe we cook the chicken from fresh. This allows us to add the seasoning and rub oil into the chicken. However you can cook a frozen chicken in the Instant Pot if you like.
Here are the general times according to the size of your chicken:
- A Frozen Whole Chicken 4lbs: Pressure cook for 40 minutes
- A Frozen Whole Chicken 5lbs: Pressure cook for 50 minutes
- A Frozen Whole Chicken 6lbs Pressure cook for 60 minutes
Do I Need To cHange the amount of liquid if the chicken is bigger?
No. You can use the same amount of liquid no matter the size of your whole chicken. In fact, adding more water would simply result in a longer time to pressurise and a soggy chicken. That’s not something you want, especially if you plan to broil and crisp the skin at the end.

How To Cook Your Garlic Roast Chicken In the Pressure Cooker
Step One: Prepare Your Chicken
Rub the outside of the chicken with olive oil, and then season with Italian seasoning, salt and pepper, to taste.
STEP TWO: Place Vegetables In The Instant Pot
Place the chopped vegetables and water in the bottom of the instant pot and place the chicken over top.
For this recipe we used a medium size chicken which is about 2- 2.5 Lbs in weight or a 1kg chicken.
STEP THREE: Add Liquid Broth Or Wine
Pour the wine and broth over the chicken. Some may not want to use wine. In this case, simply switch the wine for more chicken broth.
STEP FOUR: SECURE THE INSTANT POT LID AND PRESSURE COOK
Secure the lid. Select the manual setting, set to high, and increase time to 25 minutes.
Natural release the chicken for 10 minutes to let the chicken rest and then quick release until the pressure and steam has completely gone.
Step Five: Broil For A Crisp Skin
You can serve the chicken as it is or if you want to brown the skin some more pop it under the grill or broiler. Set the oven to broil and place the chicken under the broiler for 2-5 minutes. This will produce a crispier skin.
Can I Crisp My Whole Chicken Using The Air Fryer Lid On My Instant Pot?
The answer to this question is yes. If you have an instant pot duo crisp then simply drain any liquid from your pot and air fry your chicken for 5 minutes to crisp the skin.
If you don’t have an air fryer lid you can broil in the over perfectly fine. If you’d like to purchase the air fryer lid, here is a budget friendly option!
What To Serve With Instant Pot Whole Chicken
1. Roasted potatoes
3. Carrots, green beans or any other veggies you enjoy!
4. A side salad if that’s how you roll!
5. Go with rice if you are so inclined, but I personally don’t think it goes well with the Instant Pot Whole Chicken. I typically choose to have a salad or roasted potatoes with a whole chicken.
What Other seasonings could i USE ON A WHOLE CHICKEN?
You can season a whole chicken with anything that is easily mixable with oil or salt. You can use any spices you desire, but make sure they are compatible with the cooking method of the Instant Pot! A few ideas for mixes are listed below, but by no means are they all-inclusive!
-Salt & pepper ( my favorite!)
-Italian seasoning
-Cajun seasoning
-Garlic powder & salt
-Chili powder & salt
-Onion powder, garlic powder, celery seed, paprika mixed with oil to brush on chicken. (This makes a nice browning/breading.)
