What Is Tortellini Pasta?

Tortellini are small semi-circles of rolled dough that are folded around a filling. Tortellini is one of the most popular types of pasta in Italy and originates from the Italian city of Bologna. Here Tortellini serves as a broth-like dumpling.

Stuffed Pasta can have several fillings from a mix of meat such as pork loin or prosciutto to egg or cheese for example Parmigiano Reggiano.

Tortellini Vs Ravioli

Tortellini is very similar to ravioli, however, tortellini is rolled into circles whereas ravioli has stuffed items between two pillows of pasta. That’s the difference between tortellini and ravioli.

Once the tortellini soup is finished cooking, allow the pressure to naturally release for an additional 10-15 minutes before opening the lid.

Blend the soup using an immersion blender.

Add the tortellini and heavy cream to the Instant Pot and turn to saute once more.

Top Tips For Instant Pot Tortellini Soup

There are two main tricks to making this Instant Pot Tortellini Soup recipe a success.

The first is that you want to ensure the tortellini floats freely and doesn’t get stuck to the bottom of your pressure cooker.

The second tip is not to overfill your pot with too much liquid as it can prevent the pressure from building correctly.

What To Serve With Tortellini Soup

If you’re wondering what to eat with Tortellini soup then here are some of my top suggestions:

Does This Soup Need Tomato Paste Or Tomato Sauce?

No, this soup does not need tomato paste or tomato sauce as the richness of flavor comes from the fire-roasted tomatoes and other seasonings. However, you may choose to add a small amount for additional flavor.

Just keep in mind that adding too much can make the soup overly acidic.

You can also use a little bit of tomato sauce or paste to thicken the soup if it’s too thin.

Additionally, you can use unsalted canned tomatoes for a milder flavor.

Is Instant Pot Creamy Tortellini Soup Gluten-Free?

Yes, this recipe is gluten-free as long as you use gluten-free tortellini and gluten free stock.

Most store-bought tortellini contains gluten, but you can usually find a gluten-free version in the health food section of your local grocery store.

How To Store Fresh Tortellini Soup

Instant Pot Tortellini soup can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge and will last from 3-5 days. I would not store this soup for longer than this time frame as it won’t stay fresh for much longer than this.

Can You Freeze Tortellini Soup?

Yes, you can freeze Tortellini soup. Store in an airtight container or freezer bag and it will keep for up to 3 months.

How To Reheat Tortellini Soup

To reheat frozen tortellini soup, thaw in the fridge overnight and heat on the stovetop until warmed through.

To reheat tortellini soup in the Instant Pot, simply select the Saute setting and simmer until heated through.

You can also reheat soup in the microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring after each interval.

How To Thicken Soup?

If your soup is too thin, you can thicken it by adding a cornstarch slurry. To make a slurry, combine equal parts cornstarch and cold water in a small bowl and whisk until smooth.

Add the mixture to your soup while it’s simmering and stir until thickened. You may need to adjust the seasoning and add additional water if needed.

You can also thicken soup by blending cooked potatoes or white beans in a blender until smooth then stirring them into your soup.

The starch from these ingredients will help to thicken the soup as it simmers.

How Many Calories In Tortellini?

Tortellini soup is a great low-calorie option. Depending on the ingredients used and the portion size, it can range anywhere from 200-350 calories per serving.

How To Make This Soup Healthier

This Instant Pot Tortellini Soup can be made healthier by reducing the amount of cheese and cream used. You can also opt for an alternative to heavy cream such as half-and-half or milk.

To reduce calories and fat, use whole wheat tortellini instead of regular, and add plenty of veggies such as carrots, celery or fresh baby spinach.

Variations Of Tortellini Soup

There are many variations of tortellini soup, from vegetarian and vegan-friendly recipes to creamier options. Here are some easy variations you can try:

Vegetarian Tortellini Soup

Replace the chicken broth with vegetable broth for a vegetarian soup. You can add your favorite vegetables such as bell peppers, carrots or kale to make it more nutritious.

Spinach Artichoke Tortellini Soup

This is a creamy twist on your classic tortellini soup. Just add in a can of artichoke hearts and a big handful of spinach at the end to make it more flavorful.

Creamy Sausage Tortellini Soup

Add a cup of mild Italian sausage or pork sausage during the last step to make this soup even more delicious. You can also add some red pepper flakes for a nice kick.

Beef Tortellini Soup

Replace the chicken broth with beef broth and add in some lean ground beef. This is an easy way to make this soup more hearty and filling.
